The Little Black Book

My personal guide to Mexico City — the places I actually go to, the food I actually eat, and the experiences I keep coming back to.

Mariana, your host at Casa Caravana Mariana · Updated March 2026

I send this list to every guest before they arrive. After 195+ stays, these are the places that always get a thank-you message. I could write a book, but for now — here are my favorites.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Right Outside Your Door — Anzures

You don't even need an Uber for these.

Taquería Selene
The best al pastor in the city. Not an exaggeration. Callejero-style tacos. Every local knows this place.
Leibnitz 51
Frutos Prohibidos
Chilaquiles and fresh juices for breakfast or casual lunch. Our go-to morning spot.
Otro Café
Our favorite café in the neighborhood. Perfect for working or just sitting.
Hugo Café
Another great option when Otro Café is full.
El Fogoncito
Traditional Mexican food. Reliable, always good.
Los Panchos
A classic. Famous for a reason — pozole, enchiladas, the real thing.
Ling Ling by Hakkasan
At the Ritz, walking distance. Incredible view from the top floors. When you want something elegant.
Hotel Ritz restaurants
The rooftop restaurants are open to the public. Go for the view.
Lago Algo
Breakfast with a lake view inside Chapultepec Forest. Art exhibitions too. One of our absolute favorites.
ITINERARIES

Day Plans — How I'd Spend Your Days

These are the combinations that always work.

Coyoacán Day
Morning Visit Frida Kahlo House (book online in advance — it sells out!)
Breakfast Croasan (right next to the museum), Café El Olvidado, or Los Amantes
Lunch Restaurante La Calaca
Afternoon Walk the streets, visit the markets and plazas
Reserve the Frida Kahlo house online days before — walk-ins almost never get in.
San Ángel Saturday
Morning Breakfast at San Ángel Inn (local favorite, classic, delicious)
Visit Frida & Diego's shared house (right next to the hotel)
Late AM Uber 10 min to Plaza San Jacinto — the famous Saturday market
Afternoon Head to Xochimilco (25 min Uber) for the traditional boat ride
San Ángel morning + Xochimilco afternoon is the perfect Saturday combo.
Polanco & Museums
Morning Museo de Antropología (allow 2–3 hours, it's enormous)
Lunch Carolo or Loma Linda at Plaza Carso (beautiful view of Museo Soumaya)
Afternoon Walk through Museo Soumaya (free!), then Antara mall if you want shopping
Evening Dinner at any Polanco restaurant (5 min walk home)
The Anthropology Museum alone is worth a full morning — don't rush it.
Chapultepec Morning
Breakfast Lago Algo (lake view + art)
Morning Walk through Chapultepec Forest
Visit The Castle (panoramic city views)
Lunch Walk to Polanco (10 min)
Chapultepec Castle has one of the best views in all of Mexico City.
